While she listened, Oriana more or less leaned against Niko’s larger frame. In sharp contrast with her usual version of cuddling, which was more akin to a particularly patient cat tolerating being held until escape was convenient, she was snuggling her master more actively. She was relatively familiar with Nyx and Niko’s family religion. It would have been impossible not to gather the basics while living with the blacksmith, even if she hadn’t asked questions occasionally. The details that Niko revealed today, however, were news to her. Romantic relationships weren’t a topic the two had discussed before, so the specifics of what a sanctioned pairing looked like had been irrelevant. Oriana had shown little interest in the topic and Niko hadn’t brought it up either. The closest they came to that area was Niko reassuring Oriana that her past didn’t bother her or present any issues.

Counter to regular norms in Kumo, Niko’s clan encouraged such relationships, with the blacksmith’s own parents being joined in such a union. Perhaps it was like the tendency for children from allied families to pair off. All that time spent together, forming a bond was a good basis for forming a strong couple.

“But we can’t have a kid.”

Ordinarily, Oriana wouldn’t have been concerned about being the same sex as Niko, however that posed a challenge to expanding the Kanuchi clan’s numbers, which were already in the single digits.

“Well, we also aren’t like most people and are restricted to a single partner. If you found someone that you liked just as much as me, and made you feel the same way, you could pursue them, guy or girl. Trust, Love and Communication… as long as those aren’t broken, you have that freedom. Then there is also the option of taking in another Foundling and raising them… and then…” she paused, knowing that this one was a little awkward. “We could also just wait. If my instincts are right, Shunko will not stay alone for long, and considering she knows of this freedom and how long she was unable to explore these feelings, chances of her finding someone to bear children with are relatively high.” It was the truth, even if she didn’t want to admit it. Niko only hoped that she could ensure that she filtered out the candidates before Shunko got her hooks too deeply into them. With how her body was built, it was almost like she was designed for it.

Oriana frowned. “But I only like you.” It was a true enough statement, even in the most general sense.

Aside from Niko, she at best tolerated other people. There were perhaps one or two people she preferred to reach out to when interaction was a necessity over anyone else, such as Shunko, but Oriana couldn’t be said to “like” even her other sister. Her natural reclusiveness and history of abuse made attachment of any kind exceedingly difficult.

While the idea was distasteful, if Niko wanted biological children, Oriana would have observed the population of available men and selected some based on varying traits to attempt sex. She could bear to do that much and then likely never speak with the man again after the encounters ended. After all, she only needed to be with child. Niko could provide all the emotional and financial support she might need or want. The only thing a man would be useful for, in Oriana’s eyes, was providing the DNA sample to get pregnant.

Life was unpredictable like that, and to say with certainty, even with Orianna’s situation, that it wasn’t a possibility at all was foolish.

Hearing her say that kids could wait normally would have made the blacksmith make a comment about not being certain about being a good parent to someone so young, but she didn’t get the chance as Oriana pressed forward into her lap, and instinctively Niko’s hands moved and cupped her ass, one cheek in each hand, to help support her as she got into position. It would take a moment before she realized what she was doing and slowly move them back to the woman’s lower back.
